From Your Original Jacket Sketch to a Production Brief
You can start a custom leather jacket project with your own sketch, even when the manufacturing details are still open. Our China factory helps turn the front and back idea into a garment brief covering shape, materials, pockets, closures and fit. This page explains the decisions between a drawing and a useful first sample, so you can keep the character of your design while making its construction clear enough to quote and produce.

Your Sketch as a Garment Brief
Relia works with original jacket designs for overseas brands and boutiques. For a sketch-led project, Relia separates the features you already want from the measurements and construction choices still to develop. That gives you a focused conversation about the garment rather than asking you to arrive with every technical detail finished.
A Material Direction You Can Show
A sketch can communicate a mood without showing every construction layer. We separate its visible design features from the choices that give them shape. A soft shell allows a relaxed fold; a firmer shell makes a sharper edge. A wide collar, heavy zip and close sleeve can compete visually, so material swatches and a simple front-and-back layout help bring the design into balance.
Build the Pattern from the Design Proportions
A sketch communicates proportion before it communicates scale. Relia reviews the body length, shoulder line, collar, front overlap and pocket relationship with your chosen fit reference. Those relationships guide the pattern. The sample then brings the shell thickness, seam junctions and lining into the design, revealing where a drawn line needs an allowance, an opening or a fastening to work as a garment.
Identify the silhouette and visible details that must remain recognisable in the finished jacket.
Connect the sketch with a size, body length and intended underlayer.
Resolve openings, pockets, facings and lining access before the sample is assembled.
Mark changes by garment area so the next version answers specific design decisions.
A Fit Reference Gives Proportions Context
Tell us the intended adult wearer and the clothing worn underneath. Add finished measurements or a garment you own as a fit reference. Your target-market size name alone does not describe the jacket dimensions.
Target customer and fit preference.
The thickness of the intended outfit.
Finished dimensions or an owned garment.
The First Sample Tests the Idea
Review the sample as a complete jacket, then separate shape changes from detail changes. A sleeve-length correction and a pocket adjustment need different instructions. Mark each change in photos and connect it to the current drawing.
A Short Jacket Needs More Than a Shorter Hem
An illustrative cropped design may need its pocket and fastening moved upward as well as a shorter body. Simply removing length from a regular jacket can leave the pocket close to the hem and change its usefulness. We use the drawing to locate the new hem, then review the features around it together.
Identify the affected panel or component.
State the requested movement, dimension or finish.
Attach the relevant photo or drawing.
Construction Choices Affect the Final Look
- Review the sketch-led sample from the front, back and side, both fastened and open.
- Relia can use that review to connect a visual comment with a pattern change: a pocket that looks low may need to move with the waistline, while a collar that looks large may need a different stand or opening.
- Keep accepted details separate from revisions so they remain stable in the next sample.
The Order Starts with a Defined Version
Once the design direction is settled, bring the current drawing, material choices and measurement chart into the same order brief. Add the proposed colour and size quantities so the quotation describes the jacket you actually intend to make.
Current drawings and accepted sample details.
Component list and agreed selections.
Styles, colours and size breakdown.
Sample review and intended delivery window.
